We recognise that your journey with Northern starts long before you board one of our trains. That’s why we are investing over £30million to give our 474 stations a makeover to improve their access, safety and comfort and making them more environmentally friendly.

Some improvements our customers will have already experienced at Northern stations:

    • Car parks and cycling shelters – additional spaces and improved facilities for passengers at stations such as Garforth, Mytholmroyd, Steeton and Silsden, Prescot and Hebden Bridge
    • Up-to-the minute information – enhanced customer information points and new video help points, new and upgraded ticket vending machines, and better onward travel information
    • Waiting and booking areas – we’re viewing all our stations with fresh eyes, investing in new waiting rooms and seating, public toilets, ticket office revamps and free water refill points
    • Wayfinding and accessibility – making sure our stations work for everyone with new lifts, better lighting and wayfinding, and more step-free journeys at stations for those with heavy luggage, prams or additional access needs
    • Safer stations – We’ve taken a number of measures to keep you safe in and around our stations. This includes incorporating best practice into station design, investing in improved CCTV coverage, and the ongoing training of our Northern colleagues. The result is Secure Station accreditation for 60 of our stations.

Ideas above our station

Our station improvements also cover the little luxuries that we all appreciate on our travels. This includes:

  • Food outlets – converting prime spots into more places for you to grab a coffee and a bite to eat before you board, and adding 65 new vending machines
  • Popup stalls and markets – helping our customers to shop for one-of-a-kind finds and supporting the independent businesses on our doorstep
  • Community hubs – Our stations aren’t just for rail users. We’re home to community meet-ups and classes, social enterprises and urban gardening initiatives
  • Amazon pick-up points – Click and collect on your schedule with secure, self-service kiosks now in more of our stations
